Saraswati

Saraswati is the Hindu goddess of learning, wisdom, music, and aesthetics. She is also known as Bharati (eloquence), Shatarupa (existence), Vedamata ('mother of the Vedas'). As Vac, she is the Goddess of speech. Saraswati first appears in the Rigveda and, in later religious texts, she is identified as the inventor of Sanskrit and, appropriately, gives Ganesha the gifts of pen and inks. She is also a patron of the arts and sciences, and the wife of Brahma, even if the Bengal Vaisnavas considered her first the wife of Vishnu. Sarasvati is also worshipped as the goddess of learning in Jainism and by some Buddhist sects.

Worship & Rituals

Saraswati's name means 'elegant', 'flowing', and 'watery' and this is indicative of her status as one of the early Aryan boundary rivers. The Saraswati River (modern name: Sarsuti), just like the Ganges River, flows from the Himalaya and is considered a sacred source of purification, fertility, and good fortune for those who bathe in her waters. The sacred river, again like the Ganges, then developed into a personified deity.

About the Team...

Currently in her 9th year of full time yoga teaching, Kate offers a wide range of treasures from the chest. Kate found yoga in 2010 following an arduous period of health struggles and the preponderance in the mind of ‘what to do?’. She struck gold taking a Yoga Teacher Training in 2015 and has never looked back. Kate first trained with Vidya Heisel and Frog Lotus Yoga International accruing 500hr+ RYT and has taught alongside the school for many years. She has since taken further specialisms in Yin Yoga and Functional Movement with Josh Summers and Paul Grilley and Somatic Experiencing with Peter Levine. Kate describes yoga as her life force and knows it has saved her many times over. The door of true wealth and abundance was opened with yoga and knowledge.

For Kate, the true spark of love was ignited from the wise teachings of Vedanta and her teacher, James Swartz. This time-tested perfect means of knowledge set ablaze the path of right action and response. Kate recognises this work as a lifelong duty and a blessing therefore appreciates that learning through trials and tribulations is inevitable. Those who study and work with her can expect to experience her honest and enthusiastic approach when it comes to sharing the knowledge and practices.

As a teacher and teacher trainer Kate is passionate in bringing back an integrated approach to discovering your potential and magic through Asana, Pranayama and Meditation practices. It is through her own lived experience of tension and fatigue in the body, now converted to vitality and strength, that Kate has developed real understanding of the essential factors of subtlety, listening and careful attention. She believes that these treasures go a long way towards Self Mastery. Join Kate for what promises to be a journey of wisdom and learning.

“At school Gaby was introduced to Indian philosophical and religious thought which she went on to study at university. The values expressed through the stories within the Epic Mahabharata guided her through her early life. In later years this interest led her to Advaita Vedanta which brought further structure and theory to her beliefs. Ever the student, as a keen practitioner of yoga Gaby completed her first yoga teacher training in 2022 and continues to learn how to share her love of these practices with others. She worked for many years in academic pastoral care with teenage girls taking their pre-university exams.

This role impacted her life and learnings immeasurably as she witnessed true courage, dedication and the strength in friendship and community. She fully honours and recognises that to learn a craft one must have confidence and find comfort in one’s surroundings. An atmosphere of unbiased welcome, warmth and peaceful presence is what she hopes to cultivate in her self and surroundings. She continues to work daily to trust in these scriptures’ ancient and profound wisdom and works from a place of compassion and personal growth with an understanding that life is an opportunity in practising one's values.”

Classically trained professional chef, Gemma has a passion and talent for creating and sharing ‘soul food’. Her inspirations come from her home of 11 years in Andalusia, southern Spain where her daily contacts with local people, producers and ingredients have allowed her to create vibrant and healthy menus using organic and locally grown produce. Head Chef at Suryalila Retreat Centre for 10+ years, Gemma has worked throughout Europe, Australia and New Zealand in both retreat centres and fine dining restaurants.

Gemma is a trained Yoga Teacher specialising in restorative practices, a Usui trained Reiki Master and an International Sound Therapist from the Association of Sound Therapy. She provides one-to-one therapeutic Reiki treatments as well as group sound journeys that aim to heal and restore. From thoughtfully created food to deep energy healing, Gemma's work comes from the heart and is inspired by her passion and joy for life.

I am ever so delighted to announce ‘The Saraswati Module’ 2024 with my dear friends Gaby and Gemma.

“This retreat and training was so magical.

The nature. The food. The practice.

The space.

So much healing and learning took place

during this retreat. I feel so inspired by Kate’s

teaching and knowledge.

Words cannot my gratitude. Gaby, Gemma

and Kate - thank you thank you.

My heart is full.”

~ Moa Simonsson, Sweden

“It is hard to put into words how wonderful this retreat was! A really special experience. It felt like it flowed so well, the location was beautiful and so lovely to be immersed in nature and the peaceful surroundings.”

~Hannah Gilbert, Devon

“It took yoga further, there were greater opportunities throughout the day and the practice was deeper, I felt a greater connection with myself. I loved the meditations, something about that smaller space. The retreat also included Vedanta teachings and one of the things I loved was having the freedom to approach these in any way you choose, mine was through reading which suited the quieter space I needed after so much much travel. The retreat enabled me to have clear days to immerse myself in reading and reflecting, plus being able to talk about this with knowledgeable people. This meant that I left with far more than I came with, or at least that was the way it felt; I could bring the teachings more to myself.”

~ Harriet Price, Cambridge

“The Saraswati retreat was the most wonderful and immersive experience.

The yoga, meditation and teachings were gently intense and truly inspiring.

The food was absolutely delicious, so healthy, and beautifully presented.

The setting up in the mountains of pine trees was spectacular.

We all felt so looked after and that enormous care and attention to detail had gone into everything by the wonderful team, Kate, Gaby & Gemma.

By my return to the real world I felt fully nourished in mind and body.”
